At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a Changsha-born technology hides inside spectators' smart glasses: electrochromic lenses. With under 2 volts, they shift from clear to dark in one second — traditional photochromic lenses take over a minute.

Leng Meiying, a young professor at Hunan Normal University, spent nearly a decade researching these materials at top institutions in the U.S., Singapore, and Hong Kong before returning to Hunan in 2024. Her team cracked a long-standing trade-off: speed and contrast had always been at odds. The breakthrough came while supervising a final exam — she realized the mechanism wasn't singular but composite, combining acceleration and storage. The result: lenses tunable from 80% to 8% transmittance, coloring in about one second, fading in a few hundred milliseconds, drawing just 10mW.


研发者冷美英,湖南师范大学“90后”教授。本硕博连读华中科大,又在美国、新加坡、香港的顶尖高校深耕电致变色材料近十年。2024年回到湖南,她带领团队攻克了该领域长期痛点:变色速度与对比度难以兼得。顿悟来自一场期末考试监考——在安静中画流程图,她发现症结不在单一机制,而是一个“加速兼存储的复合模型”。突破后,团队镜片透光率80%到8%连续可调,着色约1秒、褪色百毫秒,功耗仅10mW,多项指标全球领先。


Meta, BOE, and TCL Rayneo have come calling. Three core patents were valued at 13.25 million yuan (about $1.8M). A pilot line is running in Yiyang, central China, with 100,000 units in order for this year's second half. "One day I hope to walk down the street and see someone wearing glasses made with our technology," Leng says.


Meta、京东方、TCL雷鸟等头部企业已找上门。3件核心专利作价1325万元落地量产,一条中试线已在益阳建成,下半年10万套订单排期。“希望有一天走在大街上,看到有人戴着用我们技术做出来的眼镜。”冷美英说。
