Changsha, much as Athens is for the gods of Olympus, the real-world geographical anchor of Chinese mythology. As the animated film "The Eight Immortals!" sweeps Chinese box offices this summer, grossing over 1 billion yuan (approximately $140 million), the city of Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, is drawing attention to a fact few outside China know: the legends behind the film are physically embedded in this city's geography. In Kaifu District, Chunfeng Street was formerly Lüzu Alley, named for Lü Dongbin  the most celebrated of the Eight Immortals in Daoist folklore, said to have begged there and performed the "clay pot filled with coins" miracle; a shrine once stood on the street before it was renamed in 1971. In Tianxin District, Jinxian Street — one of Changsha's last surviving flagstone-paved old lanes — takes its name from Lü Dongbin's "turning stone into gold" legend, recorded in the Kangxi-era Shanhua County Gazetteer: "a Daoist priest touched stone and left a golden line." At Heimifeng National Forest Park, Heimifeng Temple marks where Lü Dongbin reportedly practiced cultivation; the mountain is locally revered as a Daoist sacred site and popularly called Dongyang Mountain, with ancient cliff carvings still visible today.

The mythological map extends further: local folklore says Zhang Guolao carried earth on a shoulder pole that became Hanjiashan Mountain in Changsha County, and that Iron Crutch Li transformed a black stone into a natural pier at Heishi Ferry on the Liuyang River. In bygone Changsha, both barbers and goldsmiths revered Lü Dongbin as their patron deity. Today, the Changsha Museum displays a Qing Dynasty Xiang embroidery panel of the Eight Immortals — a prized collection piece measuring 41 by 207 centimeters. At Taogong Temple, founded in 505 CE, shadow puppet performances of "The Eight Immortals Offer Birthday Wishes" remain a temple fair staple. For visitors, these landmarks form a walkable mythology trail through the city — a place where a 1,500-year-old legend is not confined to texts but lives in street names, mountain shrines, museum galleries, and folk traditions.
