Xiashi Colored Lanterns originated in Xiashi Town, Haining City, Zhejiang Province in East China some 1,200 years ago. The craft rose to fame in the Tang Dynasty (618–907) and was designated an imperial tribute in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279). Renowned for its intricate and elegant designs, it employs materials such as rice paper, bamboo splints, and lead wires to produce vivid, three-dimensional lanterns. In 2006, this traditional art form was included in the first batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
