Beyond the cinematic sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie lies another face of Hunan. The Greater Zhangjiajie International Tourism Area — a unified destination spanning Zhangjiajie, Xiangxi, Huaihua and parts of Shaoyang and Changde — clusters five 5A-rated scenic spots and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within driving distance. Five ethnic groups — Miao, Tujia, Dong, Bai and Yao — still call these mountains home.

Cultural treasures here are still being made by hand. Miao silversmithing and Tujia brocade, both inscribed as national intangible heritage in 2006, preserve more than 200 traditional brocade patterns. The polyphonic Grand Songs of the Dong — a vocal tradition without instruments or conductor — were added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

The mountain kitchens are equally alive. Huayao bacon is slow-cured over pine and cypress smoke; Miao sour fish ferments in glutinous rice for at least thirty days. Zhangjiajie berry tea, cultivated across 10,000 hectares in Yongding district, now generates more than 2.5 billion yuan annually. Greater Zhangjiajie is not a museum. It is a living landscape where heritage is cooked, worn and sung every day.
